Pfizer PDC/ABCRF NMR Laboratory

On Thursday 31st October 2008, UCC President Michael Murphy along with Liam Tully of Pfizer PDC, marked the opening of the Pfizer PDC/ABCRF NMR Laboratory and to announce a collaboration involving the installation of a state-of-the-art 400MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectrometer in the ABCRF.

The spectrometer will be used daily by researchers from both the ABCRF and Pfizer's Process Development Centre and will enhance UCC#s repuation as a world-class resarch institution and educator in state-of-the-art resarch and technology for Ireland's rapidly developing pharmaceutical industry.

Eli Lilly Postgraduate Research Symposium

Science Foundation Ireland Award for ABCRF Researcher

Professor Dmitri B. Papkovsky, Biochemistry Department & ABCRF, UCC, has received a Principal Investigator award from Science Foundation Irleand totalling 1.2 million.

This funding will support Professor Papkovsky's team at UCC to develop new intracellular oxygen sensing and imaging technology, and apply this technology to the studies of cell metabolism and common disease states including stroke, cancer, hypoxia.  This programme, of both basic and applied research, will involve active collaboration with a number of leading groups in Ireland and worldwide. 


Synthesis IV

UREKA Site UPCRO Placements

The ABCRF in association with the SFI are offering Undergraduate PharamChemical Research Opportunities to 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students in Chemistry, Pharmacy or related disciplines.  UPCRO takes the form of 10 weeks summer work in the areas of Synthesis, Analysis, Formulation and Crystallisation.  The deadline for receipt of applications is the 3rd March 2008.  Further information is available at:

New Staff

The ABCRF welcomes two new members of Staff.  Dr Lorraine Bateman, NMR Spectroscopist for the ABCRF and Dr Nuala Maguire, ABCRF technician joined us in December of 2007.


5th Eli Lilly Symposium

On Friday the 14th September 2007 the 5th Eli Lilly Postgraduate Research Symposium
in Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry was held at UCC   8 postgraduate students currently undertaking research for Ph.D. degrees in Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry presented their research work at the symposium. Prize winners, judged by the Eli Lilly participants, were Marie Kissane (1st), Fiona Deane (2nd) and Marie McAuliffe (3rd).  Other speakers included were runners up: Iain O'Callaghan, Damian O'Neill, Orla MacNamara, Terence Maguire & Dawn Griffin.


Synthesis of BioActive Molecules III

On Friday 20th April 2007, the ABCRF hosted the 3rd Synthesis of Bioactive Molecules event in conjunction with the SOCI, ICI and the RSC. Speakers from home and abroad presented at this seminar, with attendees from both Universities and industry.  The event was a great success.  Check back soon for information on the next event.
